The Causes of Wrinkles

The Causes of Wrinkles

As we age, the skin tends to lose its elasticity and firmness maintained by two fundamental proteins Collagen and Elastin. Fibroblasts are the cells that have the task of producing these proteins. When the skin aging process begins, the number of fibroblasts gradually begins to decrease, as does the production of collagen and elastin. Furthermore, the work of the fibroblasts can be affected by various factors:

  • MICROCIRCULATION ALTERATION. Blood vessels dilate and lose elasticity. Consequently they do not supply the necessary oxygen and nourishment to the cells which slow down the fibroblasts which do not produce the right amounts of Collagen and Elastin.
  • UV RAYS AND FREE RADICALS. Excessive exposure to the sun without protection causes photoaging which generates the production of free radicals. Thus a degenerative process of the fibroblasts is started.
  • DEHYDRATION. As we age, the skin gradually loses its ability to hold water. As a result, the skin begins to be drier and less elastic on the surface and is predisposed to the formation of small wrinkles. We can therefore say that dehydration is like stepping on the accelerator of skin aging.
  • ALCOHOL AND SMOKING. Alcohol causes dilation and a loss of elasticity of the capillaries causing a decrease in the nutrient supply to the cells and the formation of wrinkles. Smoking causes vasoconstriction which contracts blood vessels, accelerating the skin aging process.

The Types of Wrinkles

EXPRESSION WRINKLES. Expression lines are the easiest to spot and are the ones that develop first. They are the result of the continuous contraction of the facial muscles during mimic expressions. The areas where they tend to develop most are: the sides of the nose, on the forehead, between the eyebrows, on the sides of the eyes, around the mouth and on the upper lip. Some examples are “crow’s feet”, the “barcode” and nasolabial lines (between the mouth and the nose).

ACTINIC WRINKLES. Actinic wrinkles are those caused by the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays on the skin. They are more visible in areas most exposed to the sun and even if they are more evident in elderly subjects, they can also be developed early. For example, for professional reasons some people may be exposed to the sun for many hours. Actinic wrinkles are recognized because they are very evident and give the skin a “parchment” appearance.

GRAVITATIONAL WRINKLES. Gravitational wrinkles, as the name suggests, are caused by the action of gravity on the skin during the aging phase. They are in turn divided into different categories depending on the area where they form: Latero-chin pouches, Labio-geniene, Naso-geniene, Superciliary ptosis (eyebrow sagging), Blepharocalasis (upper eyelid relaxation), Mandibular descent or “double chin”.
